Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jama'ah hold that the Quran is the literal speech (kalam) of Allah, revealed and not created — its letters and meanings are from Him, and He is the One who spoke it. Allah calls it 'the speech of Allah' (kalam Allah) and distinguishes His command and speech from His creation: 'Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command.' He also affirms that He truly speaks, as in 'And Allah spoke to Musa directly.' The claim that the Quran is created was the innovation of the Jahmiyya and Mu'tazila that the imams of the Sunnah, such as Imam Ahmad, firmly opposed.
