At death the angel of death seizes the soul, and the souls of the believers are taken up gently while the souls of the wicked are taken harshly, as detailed in the long narration of al-Bara' ibn 'Azib. The soul then enters the intermediate realm called al-Barzakh, a barrier between this world and the Resurrection, where it experiences either bliss or torment connected to the body in the grave. Allah says the disbelievers face a barrier (barzakh) until they are raised (Quran 23:100), and the people of Fir'awn are exposed to the Fire 'morning and evening' in that state (Quran 40:46). Thus the soul is neither annihilated nor reborn into another body, but awaits the Day it is returned to its body at the resurrection.
