A man came to the Prophet ﷺ saying he had ruined himself by having relations with his wife during the day in Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ ordered him to expiate by freeing a slave; if unable, then to fast two consecutive months; and if unable to do that, to feed sixty poor persons. This penalty is in addition to making up that day, and the scholars restrict this specific kaffarah to intercourse (not to eating or drinking), which is where the harshest ikhtilaf on other invalidators sits. The man's own poverty led the Prophet ﷺ to give him dates to feed his family, showing the mercy within the ruling.
