Allah expressly permitted the food of the People of the Book: "This day good things have been made lawful for you, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you" (Quran 5:5). So meat properly slaughtered by Jews and Christians is in principle halal, and one is not required to investigate whether Allah's name was pronounced, since the Companions ate the meat brought to them without asking. However, many contemporary scholars caution about modern commercial slaughter in non-Muslim lands where the animal may be killed by electrocution, drowning, or a blow (making it maytah) rather than by cutting the throat and letting the blood flow; where the method is genuinely known to be un-Islamic slaughter, it is not lawful. When in doubt and a clearly halal-slaughtered option is available, taking the certain over the doubtful is safer.
