Mercy is central to the character of a believer, and its presence or absence directly affects how Allah treats a person: the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Those who show mercy will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Show mercy to those on the earth, and the One above the heaven will show mercy to you." When a bedouin was surprised that the Prophet kissed his children, he replied, "He who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy." This mercy extends to family, the weak, the young, the old, and even animals, and it flows from Allah's own attribute of Rahmah, which He divided into portions by which creation shows compassion to one another.
