As the persecution by Quraysh intensified in Makkah, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) directed a group of the oppressed Companions to emigrate to Abyssinia (al-Habashah), whose Christian king, the Najashi (Negus), was known for his justice. When Quraysh sent envoys demanding their return, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib recited to the king from Surah Maryam, and the just ruler wept and refused to surrender the Muslims. The Najashi later accepted Islam, and when he died the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) announced his death and prayed the funeral prayer in absentia (salat al-gha'ib) for him.
