Q&A · Women in Islam

What should a woman do about prayer and fasting during her menstruation?

During menstruation a woman does not pray and does not fast, and this is a mercy and a lightening from Allah, not a punishment or a mark of impurity of her person. Afterwards she makes up the days of fasting she missed, but she does not make up the missed prayers. ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked why the menstruating woman makes up the fasts but not the prayers, and she replied, "We were ordered to make up the fasts and were not ordered to make up the prayers." This is the agreed-upon position of Ahl al-Sunnah.
