Why does Islam prohibit gambling and intoxicants, and what social harm do they cause?

Allah groups intoxicants (khamr) and gambling (maysir) together as 'an abomination from the handiwork of Satan' and commands believers to avoid them entirely (Qur'an 5:90). He identifies their social danger explicitly: Satan uses them to 'sow enmity and hatred among you' and to bar people from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer (Qur'an 5:91). While an earlier verse acknowledged they carry 'some benefit for people,' it rules that 'their sin is greater than their benefit' (Qur'an 2:219), which is why the scholars treat the prohibition as absolute.
