While in ihram both men and women must avoid: sexual relations and its preludes, sinful speech and quarreling, cutting hair or clipping nails, applying perfume, hunting land game, and contracting or proposing marriage, as Allah says regarding Hajj, 'there is no sexual relations, nor wickedness, nor disputing,' and 'do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram.' In addition, men specifically must not wear sewn or fitted garments nor cover the head, for the Prophet said the muhrim must not wear shirts, turbans, trousers, hooded cloaks, or leather socks (khuff), and he forbade the muhrim from marrying, giving in marriage, or proposing. A woman in ihram does not veil her face with a fitted niqab nor wear gloves, though she may drape a covering over her face from strangers, and violating a prohibition out of ignorance, forgetfulness, or coercion carries no penalty.
