What is the status of the Companions (Ṣaḥāba) in Sunni Islam?

The Ṣaḥāba are those who met the Prophet ﷺ as believers and died upon Islam, and Ahl al-Sunnah hold them to be the best of this ummah after the prophets. Allah praised the foremost of the Muhājirūn and Anṣār and declared His pleasure with them (Quran 9:100), and the Prophet ﷺ said, "The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3651; Sahih Muslim 2533). It is obligatory to love them, speak well of them, and withhold our tongues from the disputes that arose among them, for he ﷺ said, "Do not revile my Companions" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3673; Sahih Muslim 2540). We ask Allah's pleasure for all of them, without exaggeration and without disrespect.
