Tawaf al-Wada' is a final circumambulation of the Ka'bah that a pilgrim performs as the last of his rites before departing Makkah, and the majority of scholars hold it to be obligatory (wajib), so that one who neglects it without excuse must offer a sacrifice (dam). Ibn Abbas reported that the people were commanded to make their last covenant with the House, except that this was made lighter for the menstruating woman, who therefore leaves without it and owes nothing. Because it must be the last act, a pilgrim should not linger in Makkah for other business afterwards, though brief errands like buying travel provisions do not harm it.
