What is the virtue of patience (sabr) in Islam?

Patience (sabr) is among the greatest virtues, and Allah commands believers to 'seek help through patience and prayer,' promising that 'the patient will be given their reward without measure.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) marveled at the believer's situation, saying that all his affairs are good: when blessed he is grateful and when harmed he is patient, and both are good for him. He also taught that whoever seeks to be patient, Allah grants him patience, and that no gift is better or vaster than patience. Sabr includes patience in obeying Allah, patience in avoiding sin, and patience in bearing hardship without complaint against His decree.
