The Battle of Uhud took place in 3 AH near Mount Uhud outside Madinah against the army of Quraysh. The Muslims were initially prevailing, but the archers whom the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) had stationed on the hill left their posts to gather spoils, allowing the enemy cavalry to strike from behind; the Prophet was wounded and his uncle Hamzah was martyred. Allah then revealed verses explaining that the setback was a test and a consequence of disobeying the command, teaching the believers patience, obedience, and reliance upon Allah.
