What is asbab al-nuzul, and do I need to know it to understand a verse?

Asbab al-nuzul means the "occasions of revelation" — the specific events, questions, or incidents that a verse came down in response to. Many verses show the pattern openly, such as "They ask you about fighting in the sacred month" (Quran 2:217), "They ask you about menstruation" (Quran 2:222), and "They ask you about the crescent moons" (Quran 2:189), which are direct answers to questions put to the Prophet (ﷺ). Knowing the sabab often removes confusion about a verse's meaning and scope, which is why the scholars of tafsir gave it great attention. The established usuli rule, however, is that the ruling follows the generality of the wording rather than the specific case (al-'ibrah bi-'umum al-lafz la bi-khusus al-sabab), unless there is evidence restricting it — and a report of a sabab al-nuzul must itself come with an authentic chain, since much of what is popularly circulated is weak. So it is a valuable aid to understanding, not a precondition for benefiting from the Book.
