Bidʿah is introducing into the religion an act of worship or belief that has no basis in the Quran, the Sunnah, or the way of the Companions, presenting it as though it were part of the faith. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever introduces into this affair of ours something that is not from it, it is rejected," and he warned in his sermons that "every innovation is misguidance." This is why Ahl al-Sunnah hold that worship is grounded only in evidence, not in what people find pleasing; it does not, however, refer to worldly inventions or genuine benefits (like new tools or knowledge), which are outside the religion's rulings on worship.
