Q&A · Women in Islam

What is the ʿiddah (waiting period) after divorce or the death of a husband, and why is it prescribed?

The ʿiddah is a prescribed waiting period a woman observes after divorce or the death of her husband before she may remarry. For a divorced woman who menstruates, Allah says she waits "three periods (qurūʾ)," while a widow's waiting period is "four months and ten days." Its wisdoms include confirming that she is not pregnant so lineage is protected, giving room for reconciliation in the case of a revocable divorce, and honouring the bond of the deceased husband. A pregnant woman's ʿiddah, in either case, ends when she gives birth.
