What is the significance of the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada')?

In 10 AH the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) performed his only complete Hajj, teaching the rites in practice and delivering the Farewell Sermon at Arafah, in which he abolished the practices of Jahiliyyah and affirmed the sanctity of Muslim life, wealth, and honour. During this pilgrimage Allah revealed the verse of completion, and 'Umar reported that the Jews acknowledged its greatness while noting it was sent down on a Friday at Arafah. Jabir ibn Abdillah's lengthy narration preserves the detailed manner in which the Prophet performed the Hajj, making it a primary source for the rites.
