Is it permissible to wipe over socks (khuffs) instead of washing the feet in wudū?

Yes, wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn) in wudū is an established Sunnah confirmed by so many companions that it is a point of creed for Ahl al-Sunnah; al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah reported that he went to remove the Prophet's socks so he could wash, but the Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave them, for I put them on while my feet were pure," and wiped over them. The condition is that the socks were put on in a state of full purity. The time limit is one day and night for a resident and three days and nights for a traveler, as in the ḥadīth of ʿAlī. Many scholars extend the same ruling by analogy to thick cloth socks worn in place of khuffs.
