Al-Mu'awwidhatan are the last two surahs of the Quran, Surah al-Falaq (113) and Surah an-Nas (114), both beginning with "Qul a'udhu" ("Say: I seek refuge") and used to seek Allah's protection from every evil, including sorcery, envy, and the whispering of Shaytan. Uqbah ibn Amir reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Do you not see the verses revealed this night the like of which has never been seen? Qul a'udhu bi rabbil-falaq and Qul a'udhu bi rabbin-nas." It is Sunnah to recite them, together with Surah al-Ikhlas, three times each morning and evening and before sleeping, blowing into the palms and wiping over the body.
