What makes a good name for a Muslim child, and are there names we should avoid?

Choosing a good name is one of the first rights a child has over the parent. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said the most beloved names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman, and any name expressing servitude to Allah or a name of a Prophet is praiseworthy. He also taught that people will be called on the Day of Resurrection by their names and their fathers' names, so parents should choose good names and avoid names of false gods, names implying servitude to other than Allah (like Abd al-Nabi), or names carrying arrogant or ugly meanings.
