Divorce is permitted but is the most disliked of lawful things, so it should be a last resort after sincere attempts at reconciliation (Quran 4:35). The Sunnah form (ṭalāq as-sunnah) is that a man pronounces a single revocable divorce upon his wife during a period of purity (ṭuhr) in which he has not had relations with her, then leaves her to complete her waiting period; Allah says to divorce women "at their prescribed period" (Quran 65:1). Allah made divorce twice (Quran 2:229), after which the husband may take her back or part with kindness, and only after a third irrevocable divorce does she become unlawful to him until she lawfully marries and is divorced by another (Quran 2:230). Divorcing during menstruation is a sin, as the Prophet ﷺ ordered Ibn ʿUmar to take his wife back when he did so.
