Allah first sent the entire Quran down to the lowest heaven on the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr) in Ramadan, and from there it was revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) piecemeal over roughly twenty-three years — about thirteen years in Makkah and ten in Madinah. Allah says it was revealed on a blessed night (97:1) in the month of Ramadan (2:185). The gradual method was deliberate: 'And [it is] a Quran which We have divided in parts, that you may recite it to men at intervals, and We revealed it by stages' (17:106), and, answering the disbelievers who wanted it all at once, 'that We may strengthen thereby your heart' (25:32).
