Is aqiqah for a newborn obligatory, and when should it be done?

The majority of scholars hold that aqiqah is a confirmed sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah) rather than an obligation, though some, like the Hanbalis, considered it strongly recommended to the point of near-obligation for one who can afford it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "With a boy there is an aqiqah, so shed blood for him and remove the harm from him," and the Sunnah is to slaughter two sheep for a boy and one for a girl, on the seventh day, when the child is also named and the head shaved. If it cannot be done on the seventh day, scholars permit it whenever one is able thereafter.
