Before reciting, one seeks refuge with Allah by saying the isti'adha: 'A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim' (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan). This follows a direct command of Allah: 'So when you recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the outcast' (16:98). Its wisdom is to guard the heart from the whisperings of Shaytan so that it may receive the words of Allah with humility and presence. The majority of scholars hold this seeking of refuge to be recommended (mustahabb), and some held it obligatory based on the apparent command of the verse.
