What was the last verse of the Quran to be revealed?

There is a legitimate difference of opinion among the scholars, since the Companions reported different verses as being among the last revealed. Ibn Abbas held that the last verse revealed was, "And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah" (Quran 2:281), while al-Bara ibn Azib reported in al-Bukhari that the last verse revealed concerned the ruling of kalalah at the end of Surah an-Nisa (Quran 4:176). The verse "This day I have perfected for you your religion" (Quran 5:3) marked the completion of the legislation but was revealed at Arafah before the Prophet's death; scholars reconcile these reports by noting each Companion spoke of the last verse he personally knew of on a particular topic.
