Q&A · Youth & Parenting

Do I have to obey my parents if they tell me to do something Islam forbids?

Honoring and being kind to parents is a tremendous obligation, but obedience to them stops where disobedience to Allah begins. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "There is no obedience to any creature in disobedience to the Creator; obedience is only in what is right." Allah even addresses the case of parents pushing their child toward shirk: "But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them — yet accompany them in this world with kindness" (Quran 31:15). So you decline the sinful command itself while continuing to treat them with gentleness, respect, and good companionship.
