When the sun or moon is eclipsed the Prophet (ﷺ) commanded the eclipse prayer, saying, "The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah; they are not eclipsed for the death or life of anyone. So when you see that, pray and supplicate until it is over." It is prayed in congregation as two rak'ahs, but each rak'ah contains two standings with recitation and two bowings (rukū') before the two prostrations, as 'Ā'isha described the Prophet's prayer during the eclipse. The recitation is lengthy, and afterward the imam gives an exhortation reminding people to turn to Allah, give charity, and seek forgiveness.
