Q&A · Family

What is the sin of cutting off family ties (qatīʿat ar-raḥim)?

Severing the ties of kinship is a major sin; the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The one who severs ties of kinship will not enter Paradise." True maintaining of ties is not merely repaying those who are good to you, for he said, "The one who maintains kinship is not the one who reciprocates; rather it is the one who, when his relatives cut him off, maintains ties with them." A Muslim is therefore commanded to keep relations even with harsh or unresponsive relatives, answering their severance with kindness, and the sin of cutting off falls on the one who initiates and persists in it.
