The ʿiddah is a prescribed waiting period during which a woman does not remarry, so lineage is protected and any reconciliation in divorce is possible. A menstruating divorced woman waits three menstrual cycles (Quran 2:228); a widow waits four months and ten days (Quran 2:234); and any pregnant woman's term is until she delivers her child (Quran 65:4). A widow also observes mourning (ihdad) during this time, avoiding adornment and perfume, and scholars discuss the details of a woman past menstruation, whose ʿiddah is reckoned in months.
