Sujud al-tilawah is a single prostration that a reciter — and one who listens attentively — is encouraged to make upon reaching one of the verses of prostration in the Quran. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'When the son of Adam recites a verse of prostration and then prostrates, Satan withdraws weeping, saying: Woe to me! The son of Adam was ordered to prostrate and he prostrated, so Paradise is his; I was ordered to prostrate and I refused, so the Fire is mine.' The number of prostration verses is a point of legitimate ikhtilaf, commonly counted as fourteen or fifteen. The majority hold this prostration to be a recommended sunnah rather than an obligation, and many scholars require neither an opening takbir nor a tasleem for it.
