Q&A · Youth & Parenting

Which parent deserves more of a child's kindness — the mother or the father?

A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ), "Who among people is most deserving of my good companionship?" He said, "Your mother," and repeated it three times before saying, "Then your father." This shows the mother has a threefold share of a child's devotion because of the hardships of pregnancy, birth, and nursing, though both parents' rights are immense. Being dutiful (birr al-wālidayn) to both is among the greatest deeds and comes right after the worship of Allah alone.
