Q&A · Zakat

Do I owe zakat on my house, car, and personal belongings?

No. There is no zakat on items kept for personal use — the home you live in, your car, furniture, clothing, and everyday possessions — however valuable, because the Prophet ﷺ said, "There is no zakat due from a Muslim on his slave or his horse" (Sahih Muslim 982), from which the scholars derive that property held for personal use is exempt. Zakat is due only on "growing" categories of wealth: money, gold and silver, trade merchandise, grazing livestock, and crops. However, if you buy property or vehicles with the intention of reselling them for profit, they become trade goods and are then zakatable at their market value once a ḥawl passes.
